Constantine, Cornwall

Historical Description

Constantine, a village and a parish in Cornwall. The village stands on a branch of the Helford river near the coast, 5½ miles SW of Falmouth town and station on the G.W.R. It has a post and money order office under Penrhyn; telegraph office, Penrhyn. The parish comprises 8021 acres of land and 475 of tidal water and foreshore; population, 1771. Fine-grained granite is quarried, and oyster fishing is carried on. The Tolmen, Meantol, or Holed Stone, an egg-shaped block of granite, 33 feet long and 18 feet broad, supposed by some antiquaries to be Druidical, was formerly supported on two other blocks of stone so that people could pass beneath it, but it was thrown down during some quarrying operations in 1870. The parish is a resort of sportsmen. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Truro; value, £236 with residence. Patrons, the Dean and Chapter of Exeter. The church contains many monuments, and is exceedingly old and interesting; it has been well restored and preserved from time to time; there are about 500 sittings. There are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels.
