Historical Description
Hoathly, West, or Westhothly, a village and a parish in Sussex, with a station on the L.B. & S.C.R., 32 miles from London, and 4½ SW by S of East Grinstead. There is a post, money order, and telegraph office under East Grinstead. Acreage of the civil parish, 5340; population, 1442; of the ecclesiastical, 1256. Eockhurst and Courtlands are the chief residences. Selsfield Common commands extensive views. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Chichester; value, £120 with residence. Patron, the Lord Chancellor. The church is ancient, consists of nave, S aisle, and chancel, with tower and spire, and was restored in 1870. There is an Independent chapel. The ecclesiastical parish of Highbrook was formed in 1882 from West Hoathly. The living is a vicarage; value,, £150. The church is a small building of stone.
