Stedham, Sussex
Historical Description
Stedham, a parish, with a village, in Sussex, on the river Bother, 2 miles W by N of Midhurst station on the L. & S.W.R. and L.B. & S.C.R. It has a post office under Midhurst; money order and telegraph office, Midhurst. Acreage, 2493; population of civil parish, 558; of ecclesiastical, 528. There is a parish council consisting of seven members. The manor belonged to Earl Godwin, passed to the Earl of Montgomery, the Earl of Southampton, and Lord Selsey, and belongs now to the Scrimgeour family. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Chichester; net value, £180 with residence. The church was rebuilt in 1850.
