Tabley Inferior, Cheshire
Historical Description
Tabley, Nether or Inferior, a township in Great Budworth parish, Cheshire, 2 miles WSW of Knutsford. Post town, Knutsford. Acreage, 1206; population, 150. The manor belongs to Lord De Tabley. Tabley House, the seat of Lord De Tabley, is a red brick mansion, built in 1769, and situated in an extensive park which contains two lakes. The old 14th century hall stands on an island in the moat, and was the residence of Sir Peter Leycester, one of the most devoted adherents of the cause of Charles I., and the author of a " History of Cheshire." The east side only of this ancient timber mansion is left, including a wainscoted hall. A chapel was built on the island in 1675 by Sir Peter Leycester, and is still used.
