Rogate, Sussex

Historical Description

Rogate, a village and a parish in Sussex. The village stands on the river Rother, with a station, called Eogate and Harting, on the L. & S.W.R., 59 miles from London, and 5 W by N of Midhurst. It has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Petersfield. Acreage of the civil parish, 4984; population, 953; of the ecclesiastical, 688. There is a parish council consisting of nine members. The manor of Rogate is part of Hertinges manor, belonged in the time of Edward III. to Ralph de Camois, passed to the Crown, and was given in the time of Henry VIII. to the Earl of Southampton. The manor of Wenham includes most of the parish, and with Rogate Lodge belongs to the Wyndham family. Clayton Court, Fair Oak, and Fyning are chief residences. An ancient tower is said to have stood about half a mile from the village, and was probably erected by the family of De Camois. A small Premonstratensian canonry was founded at Dureford Abbey about 1169 by Henry Hoese. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Chichester; net value, £210. Patron, the Crown. The church, an ancient building of sandstone in the Early English style, was restored and enlarged in 1874. A club-room was erected in the village in 1887.
