An ancient tower is said to have stood about half a mile from the village, and was probably erected by the family of De Camois. A small Premonstratensian canonry was founded at Dureford Abbey about 1169 by Henry Hoese. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Chichester; net value, £210. Patron, the Crown. The church, an ancient building of sandstone in the Early English style, was restored and enlarged in 1874. A club-room was erected in the village in 1887.
