Ore, Sussex
Historical Description
Ore, a village and a parish in Sussex. The village stands 1½ mile NNW of Hastings, and has a station on the S.E.R. 62 miles from London. It has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Hastings. Part of the civil parish is in the county borough of Hastings. Acreage, 2177; population of the civil parish, 5680; of the ecclesiastical parish of Christ Church, 3646; of St Helen, 839. There is a parish council consisting of fifteen members. Ore Place is a modern mansion, and stands near the site of an old mansion said to have belonged to John of Gaunt. Coghurst Hall is a handsome residence, and stands in a fine park. There are several other good residences, and the scenery around is very beautiful. The Hastings workhouse and the Hastings Borough Sanatorium are situated near the village. The living of St Helen is a rectory in the diocese of Chichester; net value, £230 with residence. The old parochial church is a plain edifice of nave, S aisle, and chancel, with porch, vestry, and low tower, and the new one, a little to the NW, was founded in 1869. Christ Church, built in 1859, is in the Decorated English style, and consists of nave, N aisle, transept, and chancel, with bell-turret, and cost about £4000. The living is a vicarage; net value, £170. A Wesleyan chapel was built on the Vine Farm property.
