Oving, Sussex
Historical Description
Oving, a village and a parish in Sussex. The village stands three-quarters of a mile NE by E of Drayton station on the L.B. & S.C.R., and 2½ miles E of Chichester. It has a post office under Chichester; money order office, Portfield; telegraph office, Drayton. The parish contains the tithings of Woodhorn, Colworth, and Portfield, and comprises 2989 acres; population of the civil parish, 1973; of the ecclesiastical, 397. There is a parish council consisting of seven members. Shopwyke House, Woodfield House, and Oving Manor House are the chief residences. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Chichester; net value, £260 with residence. Patron, the Bishop of Chichester. The church is Early English, has been well restored and beautified, and consists of chancel, nave, and transepts, with tower and spire. There are six almshouses and two small charities.
