Lancing, Sussex
Historical Description
Lancing, a village and a parish in Sussex. The village stands near the river Adur, 2 miles WNW of Shoreham, and has a station on the L.B. & S.C.R., 58 from London. It has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Worthing. Acreage of parish, 2505 of land and 521 of water; population, 1285. St Mary and St Nicolas College is a school for the sons of gentlemen; was founded in 1848 within Shoreham parish; was removed in 1858 to an eminence with a fine view in Lancing parish; and is a large and handsome edifice, designed for upwards of 350 boys, and enlarged in 1868.½ A very handsome chapel was added to the college in 1894. Lancing manor and great part of the land belong to the Carr-LIoyd family. The name Lancing may possibly have been derived from Wiencing, a son of the Saxon king Ella. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Chichester; net value, £125 with residence. Patron, the Bishop of London. The church is Early English, consists of nave, aisles, and chancel, with a tower, and has been repaired. In the chancel there is an Easter sepulchre. There are a Wesleyan chapel, convalescent home, and almshouses.
