Icklesham, Sussex
Historical Description
Icklesham, a village and a parish in Sussex. The village stands 8 miles SW of Wiuchelsea station on the S.E.R., and has a post office under Rye; money order and telegraph office, Winchelsea. The parish extends to the coast, includes Rye Harbour, and comprises 5147 acres of land and 646 of tidal water and foreshore; population of the civil parish, 1524; of the ecclesiastical, 954. Striking views are obtained over Rye toward Dover. The living is a vicarage, united with the perpetual curacy of Rye Harbour, in the diocese of Chichester; value, £590 with residence. Patron, the Lord Chancellor. The church is mainly Norman, shows interesting features, has an Early Decorated window, and has been carefully restored. There are a Bible Christian chapel and almshouses.
