Hollington, Sussex
Historical Description
Hollington, a parish in Sussex, 2 miles N by E of St Leonards.and 2½ NNW of Hastings station on the L.B. & S.C.R. It has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Hastings. Acreage, 2463; population of the civil parish, 2056; of the ecclesiastical, 2056. Beanport Park is the seat of the Lamb family, and contains a remarkably fine collection of conifera. A great beech tree which served as a landmark was burnt in 1889. There are many fine residences in the neighbourhood. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Chichester; value, £180 with residence. The parochial church is ancient, but has been restored. St John's Church, in the lower part of the parish, was built in 1866 as a chapel of ease at a cost of about £3500, and is a handsome edifice in the Early English style. There is a Wesleyan chapel. The parish of St Leonard-on-the-Sea is supposed to have once been included in Hollington parish, being designated in old documents St Leonards-in-HoIlington.
