Historical Description
Hellingly, a parish in Sussex. It lies on the river Cuckmere, 2 miles from Hailsham, and 9 from Eastbourne, and has a station on the Groombridge and Tunbridge Wells branch of the L.B. & S.C.B.) 62 miles from London, and contains the hamlet of Horsebridge. It has a post, money order, and telegraph office. Acreage, 6050; population of the civil parish, 157; of the ecclesiastical, 1371. The soil is gravel. A deer park of the Pelhams in the time of Henry VIII. was the scene of an affray which led to the execution of Lord Dacre of Hurst-monceaux at Tybnrn. John Milles, a Protestant minister of Hellingly, was brought to the stake in the time of Queen Mary. There is a medicinal spring. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Chichester; value, £250 with residence. Patron, the Earl of Chichester. The church, dedicated to St Peter and St Paul, was restored in 1869, and again in 1886. There are Baptist and Congregational chapels, and the Hailsham Workhouse.
