Glynde, Sussex
Historical Description
Glynde, a village and a parish in Sussex. The village stands on an affluent of the river Ouse, 3 miles ESE of Lewes, and has a station on the L.B. & S.C.R., 55 miles from London, and a post, money order, and telegraph office under Lewes. Acreage, 1570; population, 329. Glynde Place, the seat of the late Viscount Hampden, is now the property of Capt. The Hon. T. S. Brand, B.N. Mount Cabum, within the parish, has on its summit an ancient circular entrenchment, and was the subject of a poem by William Hay, who lived in last century, and wrote a number of works on various topics. Glyndebourne with its park, the seat of the Hay family, now the property of W. L. Christie, Esq., late M.P. for Lewes and the lineal representative of the Hays, is situated in this parish. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Canterbury; gross value, £240 with residence. Patrons, the Dean and Chapter of Windsor. The church is in the Grecian style, was built in 1765 by Richard Trevor, bishop of Durham, and has over its portico the arms of the see of Durham, impaling those of the Trevors. An obelisk stands in the churchyard to the memory of two sons of Sir D. Wedder-burn, and has an inscription by Mrs Hemans. Hay's charity for the poor has £300 a year income, two-thirds of the same going to the aged poor of Ringhill, and one-third distributed in Glynde. A young men's institute and reading-room was erected by Viscount Hampden in 1887. Glynde Creameries, started by the late Viscount Hampden and now carried on by a company, the largest dairy establishment in the south-eastern counties, has a factory here.
