Earnley, Sussex
Historical Description
Earnley or Ernley, a parish in Sussex, on the coast, 4 miles NW of Selsey Bill, and 5½ SSW of Chichester city and station on the L.B. & S.C.R. Post town, Chichester. Acreage, 1143; population, 140. The village is on the sea-coast, and has the Houngate Rocks immediately opposite. The living is a rectory, united in 1526 with Almodington, in the diocese of Chichester; value, £320 with residence. Patron, the Bishop of Chichester. The church is a small and ancient edifice, consisting of chancel, nave, and western tower, with one bell. The seat of the Ernie's, a large castellated mansion, surrounded by a moat, formerly stood near the church. The family took its name from the parish, and held the manor for some centuries. Almodington was formerly a separate parish, but is now only a tithing of Earnley.
