Clapham, Sussex

Historical Description

Clapham, a parish in Sussex, 2½ miles N of Goring station on the L.B. & S.C.R., and 5¼ E of Arundel. It has a post office under Worthing; money order and telegraph office, Patching. Acreage, 1807; population, 270. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Chichester; net value, £96 with residence. The church has several brasses and a carved stone monument to members of the Shelley family of Michelgrove in this parish. The monument is to Sir W. Shelley, who was judge in the time of Henry VIII. The church was thoroughly restored in 1873.
