Sutton, Surrey
Historical Description
Sutton, a village and a parish in Surrey. The village has a junction station on the L.B. & S.C.R., 14 miles from London, and 4¼ WSW of Croydon. It consists chiefly of one street, and has a post, money order, and telegraph office. The parish includes Benhilton, a group of new villas at Been Hill, numerous other new villas and cottages, and the South Metropolitan District School. Acreage, 1836; population of the civil parish, 13,977; of the ecclesiastical, 12,439. There is an urban district council consisting of twelve members. The church of St Nicholas was rebuilt in 1864, and is an edifice of flint in the Gothic style. It contains some handsome monuments and memorials. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Rochester; gross value, £600 with residence. Patron, Hertford College, Oxford. Christ Church is a handsome building of brick in the Early English style. The living is a vicarage; net value, £400. St Barnabas is an edifice of brick in the Decorated style. The living is a vicarage; gross value, £180. Patron, the Bishop of Rochester. The church of All Saints. Benhilton, is in the Early Decorated style. The living ie a vicarage; gross value, £440 with residence. There are Baptist, Wesleyan, Congregational, Primitive Methodist, United Methodist, and Roman Catholic chapels.
