Shotwick, Cheshire

Historical Description

Shotwick, a township and a parish in Cheshire. The township lies 3½ miles WSW of Ledsham station on the Birkenhead railway, and 7 NW of Chester. Post town, Neston, under Chester; money order and telegraph office, Great Saughall. Acreage, 566; population, 77. The parish contains also the townships of Woodbank, Little Sanghall, and Great Saughall. Acreage, 2446; population, 961. Great Saughall has a parish council of nine members. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Chester; net value, £210 with residence. Patrons, the Dean and Chapter of Chester. The church is partly Norman, chiefly Early English, and the chancel was restored in 1857. The rectory of Capenhurst is a separate benefice. There are Baptist, Presbyterian, and Primitive Methodist chapels at Great Sanghall.
