Nutfield, Surrey
Historical Description
Nutfield, a village and a parish in Surrey. The village stands 3½ miles E by N of Reigate, and has a station on the S.E.R., 23 miles from London, and a post, money order, and telegraph office under Redhill. Acreage of the civil parish, 3401; population, 1642; of the ecclesiastical parish of Christchurch, 645; and of St Peter and St Paul, 942. There is a parish council consisting of nine members. Nutfield Priory, Patteson Court, Holmesdale, Lyttelhall, Nutfield Court; and Capenor are chief residences. Fullers' earth has been dug here for centuries. Building stone and hearth stone also are largely quarried. The fullers' earth beds contain sulphate of barytes in detached nodular masses, and the sandstone beds contain, among other fossils, a large species of ammonite and a nautilus. An earthen vessel containing about 900 Roman coins was found in 1755. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Rochester; value, £500 with residence. Patron, Jesus College, Oxford. The church stands in a picturesque situation, is chiefly Early Decorated English, partly Later English, comprises nave, N aisle, and chancel, with embattled western tower; has been well restored, and contains many interesting brasses and memorials.
