Historical Description

Croxton, South, a village and a parish in Leicestershire, on an affluent of the river Wreak, 4 miles SSE of Brooksby station on the M.R., and 7 SW of Melton-Mowbray. Post town, Leicester; money order and telegraph office, Syston. Acreage, 1663; population, 234. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Peterborough; gross yearly value, £150 with residence. Patron, the Duke of Rutland. The church is old but good. There is a Primitive Methodist chapel.

Church of England

St. John (parish church)

The church of St. John is an ancient building of stone in the Early English style, with additions of the Decorated period: the font is circular, Early Norman in date, c. 1120, with curious interlacing and figure carving: the church consists of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and western tower with spire, containing 4 bells, dated 1636: the spire is Early English, and the outer surface of the tower is a casing of Decorated work of about 1355, changing the broach spire and tower into an embattled form: there is a heraldic brass to Mrs. Chambers, dated 1578, and an ancient font: there are 157 sittings.
