Historical Description
Orton-on-the Hill, a village and a parish in Leicestershire. The village stands near the boundary with Warwickshire, 3 miles E of Polesworth station on the L. & N.W.R., 6 N of Atherstone, and 9 SW of Ashby-de-la-Zouch. It has a post office under Atherstone; money order and telegraph office, Twycross. The parish comprises 2033 acres; population of the civil parish, 238; of the ecclesiastical, 210. The manor, with Orton Hall, belongs to the Perkins family. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Peterborough; net value, £120 with residence. Patron, the Bishop of Peterborough. The church is a large and ancient building of stone chiefly in the Early Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, S aisle, S porch, and an embattled western tower. There are some small charities.
