Kilby, Leicestershire

Historical Description

Kilby, a parish, with a village, in Leicestershire, on a branch of the river Soar, and on the Union Canal, 2¼ miles from Glen station on the M.R., and 63- SSE of Leicester. It has a post office under Leicester; money order office, Countes-thorpe; telegraph office, Glen railway station. Acreage, 1068; population of the civil parish, 242; of the ecclesiastical, with Wistow and Newton Harcourt, 445. The living is a vicarage, with that of Wistow and Newton Harcourt annexed, in the diocese of Peterborough; net yearly value, , £160. The church is a plain modern building of stone in the Early English style, and there is a small Congregational chapel.

Church of England

St. Mary Magdalen (parish church)

The church of St. Mary Magdalen, rebuilt in 1858, is a small and plain edifice of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch and an open turret containing one bell: the stained east window is a memorial to the Rev. Henry Kebble, 54 years perpetual curate of this parish (1813-67), placed by his children; in the chancel is also a memorial window to Daniel Glover and Sarah his wife: the eagle lectern of oak is a memorial to Jonathan Glover, and there is a brass to Daniel, Jonathan and Joseph Glover: the church was renovated at a cost of about £120, in memory of Queen Victoria: there are 350 sittings, 100 being free.
