Barkby, Leicestershire

Historical Description

Barkby, a township and a parish in Leicestershire. The township lies on an affluent of the river Wreak, 1½ mile S by E of Syston station on the M.R., and 4½ miles NE of Leicester, and it includes the hamlet of Hambleton. The parish contains also the hamlet of Barkby-Thorpe. It has a post office under Leicester; money order and telegraph office, Syston. Acreage, 2299; population of the civil parish, 631; of the ecclesiastical, 690. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Peterborough; gross value, £127 with residence. The church is large and was built in 1350. There are Wesleyan and Primitive Methodist chapels.

Church of England

St. Mary (parish church)

The church of St. Mary is a large edifice, in the Early English style of the 14th century, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and a western tower with lofty spire, containing 5 bells and a clock, provided in 1898, at a cost of about £90: there is a memorial window to Maj.-Gen. Johnstone and Rebecca his wife, dated 1857, and numerous tablets to the Pochin family: the church has been restored and a new pulpit and chancel screen erected: the churchyard was considerably enlarged in 1887 by public subscription.
