North Ormsby, Lincolnshire
Historical Description
Ormsby, North, or Nun Ormsby, a village and a parish in Lincolnshire. The village stands 2½ miles SW of Ludborough station on the East Lincolnshire branch of the G.N.R., and 5 NW by Nof Louth, and is small but pleasant. Post town and telegraph office, Louth; money order office, North Thoresby. Acreage of parish, 1716; population, 183. The manor belongs to the Saunders family. A Gilbertine nunnery was founded in the time of Stephen by the Earl of Albemarle and Robert de Ormsby, and was given at the dissolution to Sir R. Heneage. Roman coins have been found. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Lincoln; gross value, £200. The church was rebuilt in 1848, and is a neat structure of stone in the Early English style, with a bell-turret.
