Greatford or Gretford, Lincolnshire
Historical Description
Greatford or Gretford, a village, a township, and a parish in Lincolnshire. The township lies on the river Glen, 2½ miles N by E from Tallington station on the G.N.R., and 6 NE from Stamford; includes a well-built village of its own name, and has a post and money order office under Stamford; telegraph office, Tallington railway station. Acreage of township, 1447; population, 182; of ecclesiastical parish, which includes Wilsthorpe, 266. The manor belongs to the trustees of the late Lord Chesham. Greatford Hall is the seat of the Peacock family. The living is a rectory, united with the perpetual curacy of Wilsthorpe, in the diocese of Lincoln; joint net yearly value, £358 with residence. Patron, the Lord Chancellor. The church is an ancient cruciform building of stone in the Early English, Decorated, and Perpendicular styles. The village is extremely picturesque; a fitream runs by the churchyard walk and through the rectory grounds. There is a very fine old Elizabethan hall. The manor house is a square stone building.
