Historical Description
Covenham St Bartholomew, a village and a parish in Lincolnshire, adjacent to the Louth navigation, 3¼ miles ESE from Ludborough station on the G.N.R., and 5½ NNE of Louth. There is a post office, of the name of Covenham, near Louth; money order office, Fulstow; telegraph office, Marshchapel. Acreage, 1309; population, 218. A small Benedictine priory was founded here in 1082 by Bishop Cari-leph. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Lincoln; net yearly value, £175. Patron, Bishop of Lincoln. The church is Early English, was the minster of the Benedictine priory, cruciform, without aisles, but with a central tower, has lost the north transept, and contains a curiously sculptured octagonal font. It is built of chalk. There are three Methodist chapels —Wesleyan, Primitive, and Free.
