Wollaston, Shropshire
Historical Description
Wollaston (properly Great Wollaston), a township and an ecclesiastical parish in Alberbury parish, Salop and Montgomeryshire. The township is 1 mile E of Middletown station on the Shrewsbury and Welshpool Joint (L. & N.W. and G.W.) railway, and 12 miles W of Shrewsbury. The ecclesiastical parish was constituted in 1864, and includes also the townships of Bulthey, Trefnant, and Winnington in Shropshire, and the townships of Middletown and Uppington in Montgomeryshire. Acreage of the Salop portion, 3406; population, 356. Post town and money order office, Halfway House, under Shrewsbury; telegraph office, Westbury (R.S.) Acreage of the Montgomeryshire portion, 1751; population, 188. There are quarries, lead and barytes mines, and a parish council of five members. The living is a vicarage W the diocese of Hereford; net value, £123 with residence. Patron, the Vicar of Alberbury. The church was rebuilt in 1788, and the interior was restored in 1885. It contains a brass tablet to the memory of " Old Parr," who is said to have been born in 1483 at Winnington, and died in 1635. His cottage, 1 mile from Middletown railway station, is still shown to visitors. Middletown church, dedicated to All Saints, was built in 1871, and has since been considered as the parish church. There is a Wesleyan chapel.
