St Martin, Shropshire
Historical Description
Martin, St, a village and a parish in Salop. The village lies on the river Morlas and the Shropshire Union Canal, adjacent to the river Ceiriog at the boundary with Wales,Similes NE of Gobowen station on the G.W.R., 3 ESE of Chirk, and 5½ NNE of Oswestry. It has a post, moneyorder, and telegraph office under Ruabon. The parish comprises the townships of Iftoa Rhyn, Weston Ehyn, and Bronygarth. Acreage, 5485; population of the civil parish, 2882; of the ecclesiastical, 1235. There are coal mines. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of St Asaph; net value, £200 with residence. Patron, Lord Trevor. The church is ancient, and contains tablets to the Trevor family and others. The townships of Bronygarth and Weston Ehyn were formed in 1870 into an ecclesiastical parish, called The Lodge. Population, 1647. There are Primitive Methodist and Wesleyan Association Methodist chapels and almshouses.
