Edgmond, Shropshire
Historical Description
Edgmond, a village, a township, and a parish in Salop. The village stands near the Shropshire Union Canal, 2 miles. W of Newport, and has a post office under Newport, Salop; money order and telegraph office, Newport. The township includes Adeney, Buttery, Calvington, Caynton, and Stand-ford. Acreage, 4199; population, 835. The parish includes also the townships of Cherrington, Tibberton, Chetwynd-Aston, and Church-Aston. Acreage, 8742; population,. 2489. Chetwyud-Aston forms part of the ecclesiastical parish of Chnrch-Aston, and Cherrington part of the ecclesiastical parish of Tibberton. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Lichfield; net value, £1190 with residence. The church is ancient, has a tower, and contains some excellent stained glass; it was restored in 1878. The rectory is a 14th century house. The rectories of Church-Aston and Tibberton are separate benefices. There is a Primitive Methodist chapel at Edgmond.
