Sherburn, West Riding of Yorkshire
Historical Description
Sherburn, a small town, a township, and a parish in the W.R. Yorkshire. The town stands 1½ mile N of a section of the N.E.R., 1¾ NW of Milford Junction, and 12 miles E of Leeds. It had an ancient palace of King Athelstane, and a residence of the archbishops of York; is now a seat of petty sessions; and has a station on the railway, a post, money order, and telegraph office, of the name of Sherburn-in-Elmet, under South Milford (R.S.O.) The church is a fine specimen of Decorated Norman architecture, with points of exceptional interest, and a fine tower. There are a Wesleyan chapel, a bank, a police station, an endowed school founded in 1608, another endowed school at Cawood with about £275 a year for the clothing, maintenance, and education of poor girls, some small charities, and a fair on 25 Sept. There are brick and tile works. The township contains also the hamlet of Lennerton, and comprises 4859 acres; population, 1859; of the ecclesiastical parish, which includes Lotherton, 2697. There is a parish council consisting of nine members. The manor belongs to the Gascoigne family. The parish contains also the townships of Barkston Ash, Lotherton, and Newthorpe. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of York; net value, about £300 with residence. Patron, the Archbishop of York. The rectory of South Milford is a separate benefice.
