Goole, West Riding of Yorkshire
Historical Description
Goole, a township, a seaport, market and union town, and parish in the W.R. Yorkshire. The township lies on the river Ouse, at the junction of the Don or Dutch river, on the N.E.R. main line from Hull to Doncaster, 3½ miles S of Howden. Acreage, 4696 of land and 142 of water; population of the civil parish, 4853; of the ecclesiastical, 15, 168. The town includes also parts of the townships of Hook and Airmyn. It was, about 1820, an insignificant village, but it is now a seat of county courts, a market-town, a port, and a flourishing seat of considerable trade and commerce, and is governed by a local board of twelve members. It has a railway station, used jointly by the N.E., the M.S. & L., and the L & Y. railways, a post, money order, and telegraph office, for which a new building was erected in 1892; four banks, a bridge over the Dutch river, a court-house (erected in 1887-88), a customhouse, extensive docks; a splendid church, in the Perpendicular style, with lofty spire; three mission churches, several dissenting chapels, a Roman Catholic church, an endowed school, a literary and scientific institute, and a workhouse. It carries on the manufacture of alum, rope-making, iron-founding, agricultural machine-making, shipbuilding, sail-making, and corn-grinding. The Aire and Calder Navigation gives extensive communication inland to vessels drawing 7½ feet water, and the Ouse brings up vessels drawing from 15 to 21 feet water. Two docks-the one 600 feet by 200, for ships; the other 900 feet by 150, for barges-were opened in 1826; a basin or entrance harbour, 250 feet by 200, with two entrance gates, is between these docks and the river; a third dock, of commodious structure, for large steamers, with two entrance locks, which has been increased to 264 feet by 58, was opened in 1839; a capacious dry dock, suitable for the largest steamers, was completed in 1841; and another dock, called the railway dock, together with a patent slip, was constructed in 1857; and hydraulic machinery, for opening the entrance gates and working a coal-hoist, was erected. The Aldam dock, of more than 2½ acres, was opened in 1882. The Stanhope dock of 5 acres was opened in 1892. Extensive fire-proof warehouses stand connected with all the docks, and there is also a timber pond capable of holding 3000 loads of timber. The port was constituted in 1827, and has Selby for a sub-port. The number of vessels registered in 1894 was 198 (124, 259 tons). The entries average 2000 (571, 000 tons), and the clearances 2200 (664, 000 tons). The customs revenue in 1893 was, £29, 460. The chief commerce is in corn, coal, fruit, timber, paving-stone, and general merchandise. The ecclesiastical parish is more extensive than the town, and was constituted in 1849. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of York; gross yearly value, £300 with residence. Patron, the Archbishop of York.
