Wilcot, Wiltshire

Historical Description

Wilcot, a parish, with a village and three tithings, in Wiltshire, on the Avon and Kennet Canal, 2 miles W by N of Pewsey station on the G.W.R. It has a post office under Pewsey; money order and telegraph office, Pewsey. Acreage, 3022; population of the civil parish, 548; of the ecclesiastical, 497. The manor belonged in the Norman times to Edward of Salisbury, passed to the Lovells, and remained with them till the time of Henry VII. Wilcot Manor House and Stowell Lodge are the chief residences. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Salisbury; gross value, £175 with residence. The church is a building of stone in the Early English style.
