Hannington, Wiltshire

Historical Description

Hannington, a village and a parish in Wiltshire. The village stands 2 miles W by N of Highworth, 2 S of the river Thames at the boundary with Gloucestershire, and has a station on the G.W.R., 78 miles from London, and a post office under Swindon; money order and telegraph office, Highworth. It is a pretty place, built in the form of the letter Y. The parish comprises 2518 acres; population, 295. Hannington Bridge leads over the Thames into Gloucestershire, and Hannington has a fine view. Hannington Hall is a chief residence. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Gloucester and Bristol; value, £130. The church is good, has a square tower, and contains monuments of the Frekes; it was restored in 1871. There are a free school and some charities.

St. John the Baptist (parish church)

The church of St. John the Baptist is a stone edifice in the Early English and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower, containing 5 bells: the church contains monuments to the Freke and other families: there is a fine reredos and a stained window: the south porch has a Late Norman doorway: the interior was restored and reseated in 1871 and affords 300 sittings.
