Offchurch, Warwickshire

Historical Description

Offchurch, a village and a parish in Warwickshire, on the river Learn, the Warwick and Napton Canal, and the Fosse Way, 3 miles E of Leamington, and 5 E by N of Warwick. There is a post office under Leamington Spa; money order office, Cnbbington; telegraph office, Leamington. Acreage of parish, 2286; population, 308. There is a parish council of five members. The manor belonged anciently to the Mercian kings-afterwards to Coventry Priory, passed at the dissolution to the Knightley family, and, with all the property, belongs now to the Countess of Aylesford. Offchurch Bury, an ancient stone mansion, stands on the Learn, in a finely-wooded park of about 250 acres. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Worcester; gross value, £328 with residence. The church is ancient, consists of nave and chancel, with porch and tower, and contains several handsome monuments and tablets to members of the Knightley family, and some stained windows.
