Hampton in Arden, Warwickshire

Historical Description

Hampton-in-Arden, a village, a township, and a parish in Warwickshire. The village stands on the river Blythe, contiguous to the Hampton Junction station of the L. & N.W.R. and M.R., 3 miles E of Solihull, and 9½ SE by E of Birmingham, occupies a rising-ground, was once a market-town, and has a post, money order, and tele-' graph office under Birmingham, and fairs on the first and third Monday in each month. The parish includes the townships of Hampton-in-Arden, Rinwalsey, Rnowie, Bal-sall, and Nuthurst. Acreage, 11, 674; population, 3708; acreage of the township, 2424; population, 710; of the ecclesiastical parish, 725. The manor belongs to the Peel family. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Worcester; gross value, £562 with residence. The church is ancient; belonged to the canons of Renilworth; has features of Saxon or of Early Norman, and consists of a chancel, nave, aisles, south porch, and a low tower. There is a Congregational chapel. The livings of Balsall, Rnowie, and Nuthurst are separate benefices.
