Withyham, Sussex

Historical Description

Withyham, a parish in Sussex, with a station on the L.B. & S.C.R., 35 miles from London, and 6½ SW by W of Tnnbridge Wells. It has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Tunbridge Wells. Acreage, 8126; population of the civil parish, 2073; of the ecclesiastical, 662. There is a parish council consisting of eleven members. The manor, with Buckhurst Park, belongs to Earl Delawarr. Ruins of an ancient mansion of Buckhurst, including a tower and other parts, are near the church. There are several handsome residences in the vicinity. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Chichester; net value, £450 with residence. Patron, Earl Delawarr. The church includes a private chapel of the Sackvilles, containing three fine monuments. A chapel of ease is at Blackham. There are Baptist and Presbyterian chapels.
