Robertsbridge or Rotherbridge, Sussex

Historical Description

Robertsbridge or Rotherbridge, a village in Salehurst parish, Sussex, on the river Bother, with a station on the S.E.R., 50 miles from London. It has a post, money order, and telegraph office, an institute with reading-room, workmen's club, a hotel, two bridges, a fortnightly market on Monday, and a fair on 25 September. A Cistercian abbey was founded at an adjacent farm in 1176 by Alured de St Martino, was given at the dissolution to Sir W. Sidney, and has left some remains, which are incorporated with the farmhouse. There are Wesleyan, Congregational, and Baptist chapels; also a Gospel mission hall.
