Hove, Sussex

Historical Description

Hove, a town and a parish in Sussex. The town stands on the coast and on the South Coast railway, adjoins Brighton, and was formerly a small village of scattered houses. It is distinct from Brighton, with separate local government, but is united with West Brighton by a series of handsome streets, squares, and terraces, equal or superior to the best in other parts of Brighton, is a coast-guard station, and has a very handsome town-hall and two stations on the railway. A sea wall and groynes for the protection of the lawns and foreshore have been erected at great cost. The parish is all within Brighton parliamentary borough. Acreage, 786; population of the civil parish, 26, 097; of the ecclesiastical mother church, 16, 351; of St Bamabas, 6333; and of St Patrick, 3413. Hove House, now called Melrose Hall, was the residence of MrW. Rigden, the famous breeder of Southdown sheep. The living of All Saints is a vicarage, united with Old Church, in the diocese of Chichester; gross value, £600 with residence. The parish church. All Saints, is in the Early Decorated style, and £20, 000 has been expended upon the building of the nave. The former parish church, which is at Cliftonville, is partly Early English, and was rebuilt about fifty years ago in the Norman style. There are also in the parish three curacies, places of worship for all denominations of dissenters, and several good public schools.
