Crawley, Sussex

Historical Description

Crawley, a village and a parish in Sussex. The village stands near the boundary with Surrey, and has a station on the L.B. & S.C.R., 29 miles from London, and 7½ W by S of East Grimstead; it has been much improved and extended, and has a head post, money order, and telegraph office, two inns, a church. Congregational, Baptist, and Roman Catholic chapels, and fairs on 8 May and 9 Sept. The church is Decorated English, with a square tower, and was restored in 1880. It has a very fine old roof and curious crossbeam. The carved oak work in the church is worth inspection, and is the work of the rector, the Rev. J. B. Lennaid. The Roman Catholic chapel, with conventual buildings, was erected in 1861 at a cost of £5000, but is very plain. The parish comprises 780 acres; population, 437. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Chichester; value, £114 with residence.
