Wallington, Surrey

Historical Description

Wallington, a hamlet and a parish in Surrey. The southern and principal part of the hamlet lies on the river Wandle, with a station on the L.B. & S.C.R., 13 miles from London, and 2½ WSW of Croydon. It is supposed to have been a Roman station, and has yielded many Roman relics. It has post, money order, and telegraph offices. Acreage of the civil parish, 823; population, 3823; of the ecclesiastical district, 2937. There is a parish council consisting of twelve members. The chapelry includes the village, and was constituted in 1867 as the ecclesiastical parish of Beddington. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Rochester; gross value, £350 with residence. The church was built in 1867, and is in the Decorated style, with a tower and spire. There are Baptist, Plymouth Brethren, and Presbyterian chapels. Hackbridge is part of the hamlet about half a mile north, and has a station on the South London line. Beddington Corner adjoining Mitcham Common and Mitcham Junction station, is the most northern portion of the hamlet, and together with Hackbridge is still included in the ecclesiastical parish of Beddington.
