Capel, Surrey

Historical Description

Capel, a parish in Surrey, on the L.B. & S.C.R., 32 miles from London. It has a post, money order, and telegraph office under Dorking. Acreage, 5663; population of the civil parish, 1482; of the ecclesiastical, 1035. Part of the surface is moorish. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Winchester; value, £262 with residence. The church is good. The vicarage of Cold Harbour is a separate benefice. There are a Friends' meeting-house and a Wesleyan chapel, a village hospital, built in 1864, and an almshouse.

St. John the Baptist (parish church)

The church of St. John the Baptist, erected about 1250, is a building of stone, principally in the Early English style, and has a turret containing 6 bells; the chancel was restored in 1852; during 1865 the nave and spire were restored and a north aisle, organ chamber and vestry added; in 1896 an organ was presented, and in 1902 a choir vestry added at a cost of £300; a reredos and font of serpentine marble were given by Edwin Kerrich esq, of Arnolds and a lych gate was erected by Mrs. Anne O'Fflahertie, in memory of her husband, the Rev. John O'Fflahertie, and a lancet window to her son, John Bourke O'Fflahertie. There are several stained windows: the church affords 250 sittings: the churchyard is separated from the road by a stone wall.
