The Orwell, Suffolk

Historical Description

Orwell, The, a tidal river or narrow estuary in Suffolk, really the lower or seaward reach of the river Gipping, commencing at Ipswich and extending about 10 miles south-eastward to a junction with the mouth of the estuary of the Stour at Harwich. It has nowhere a width of more than a mile; it makes one bend 2 miles below Ipswich, and another 6 miles further on, with the effect of looking like a lake throughout the intermediate distance; it is flanked along both sides with ornate landscape, including gardens, parks, and mansions; and it was eulogised by Drayton as the " princely river." See HARWICH.
