Stoke by Clare, Suffolk

Historical Description

Stoke-by-Clare, a parish, with a village, in Suffolk, on the river Stour, and on the G.E.R., 2½ miles WSW of Clare. It has a station on the railway, and a post office under Sudbury; money order and telegraph office, Clare. Acreage, 2430; population, 658. There is a parish council consisting of seven members. The manor belongs to the Elwes family. Stoke College was originally a Benedictine priory, founded in the time of the Confessor, and is now the property of the Elwes family. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Ely; gross value, £115 with residence. The church is a fine building of flint and stone in the Perpendicular style, dating in part from 1415. There are an almshouse and several useful charities. Archbishop Parker was dean of Stoke College.
