Sotterley, Suffolk

Historical Description

Sotterley, a village and a parish in Suffolk, 4½ miles E from Brampton station on the Ipswich and Lowestoft section of the G.E.R. Post town and money order and telegraph office, Wangford. Acreage, 1597; population, 246. Sotterley Hall is a fine country mansion erected about the middle of the 18th century, surrounded by a well-timbered park of 400 acres. The manor with all the land belongs to the Barne family. The living is a rectory, annexed to Willingham, in the diocese of Norfolk. The church, which stands in the park, is an ancient building of flint in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, S porch, and a lofty square western tower. It contains a fine carved oak screen dividing the nave from the chancel, and some ancient and interesting tombs and monuments.
