Hopton (Lowestoft), Suffolk
Historical Description
Hopton, a village and a parish, near Lowestoft, in Suffolk. The village stands close to the coast, 4½ miles N from Lowestoft station on the G.E.R.,-5 from Great Yarmonth, and has a post office under Great Yarmouth; money order and telegraph office, Gorleston. The parish comprises 1291 acres; population, 304. Hopton Hall is a modern mansion of white brick standing in well-wooded grounds. Hopton House has an artificial lake. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Norwich; gross value, £186. Patrons, the Dean and Chapter of Norwich. The church was destroyed by fire in 1865, and a handsome new one was consecrated in 1866. It is a cruciform building of flint with dressings of stone, in the Early English style.
