Covehithe or North Hales, Suffolk

Historical Description

Covehithe or North Hales, a parish in Suffolk, on the coast, 4t miles N by E of Southwold, and 6¼ SSE of Carlton-1 Colville station on the G.E.R. Post town, Wangford; money order and telegraph office, Wrentham. Acreage, 1458; population, 162. The living is a vicarage, annexed to the rectory of Benacre, in the diocese of Norwich. The ancient church was a fine structure destroyed in the Civil War; another was erected in 1672, and has a handsome tower. This is now in ruins. The present church was built on to the old tower. It contains a pulpit, font, and peal of five bells from the old church. Bishop Bale was a native.
