Hamstall Ridware, Staffordshire

Historical Description

Hamstall Ridware, a village and a parish in Staffordshire. The village stands on the river Blyth, 2½ miles N of Armitage station on the L. & N.W.R., and 4½ E by N of Rugeley, and has a post office under Rugeley; money order office, Yoxall; telegraph office, Kings Bromley. The parish includes also the hamlets of Nethertown and Hadley. Acreage, 3124; population of the civil parish, 316; of the ecclesiastical, 282. The old manor house has an ancient gateway and a watch-tower, and is now a farmhouse. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Lichfield; net value, £225 with residence. Patron, Lord Leigh, who is lord of the manor. The church is ancient, but was restored in 1872, and contains an old altar-tomb, a brass, and two old paintings. The windows contain some ancient stained glass. In the churchyard is an old stone cross.
