Wombridge, Shropshire
Historical Description
Wombridge, a parish in Salop, on Watling Street, half a mile from Oakengates station on the L. & N.W.R. and G.W.R., and 3½ miles E of Wellington! Post town, Wellington; money order and telegraph office, Oakengates. It includes Ketley Bank and part of Oakengates and of Trench. Acreage, 702; population of the civil parish, 2786; of the ecclesiastical, 1569. There are extensive ironworks, connected by a branch line with the L. & N.W.R. There are slight remains of a monastery of Canons Regular, founded by William Fitz Alan of Clun in the 12th century. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Lichfield; gross value, £170. A new church was built in 1869 on the site of a previous edifice. There are Baptist, Congregational, New Connexion and Primitive Methodist, and Wesleyan chapels.
