Oxon and Shelton, Shropshire

Historical Description

Oxon and Shelton, a township and an ecclesiastical parish in Shrewsbury St Chad parish, Salop, on the river Severn, 2 miles WNW of Shrewsbury. There is a post office at Bicton Heath, under Shrewsbury; money order and telegraph office, Shrewsbury. The Salop and Montgomeryshire Lunatic Asylum is at Bicton Heath. Oxon House is the chief residence. The ecclesiastical parish was constituted in 1855. Population, 405. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Lichfield; net value, £160. Patron, the Vicar of St Chad. The church is modern and good. There is a New Connexion Methodist chapel. Oxon and the adjoining parish of Bicton are now united for civil purposes, and form the civil parish of Bicton, with a parish council consisting of thirteen members.
