Leaton (St Alkmonds), Shropshire

Historical Description

Leaton, a township in St Alkmond's parish, Shrewsbury, and an ecclesiastical parish formed from the parishes of St Mary, Shrewsbury, Fitz, and Preston Gubbals. The township lies near the river Severn, 4 miles NNW of Shrewsbury, and has a station on the G.W.R. The ecclesiastical parish was constituted in 1860, and includes the village of Bomere-Heath, which has a post and money order office under Shrewsbury; telegraph office, Hadnall. Population, 347. Leaton Knolls is the chief residence. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Lichfield; gross value, £106 with residence. The-church was built in 1860, is in the Early English style, and consists of nave, aisles, and chancel, with tower and spire. There are Congregational and Wesleyan chapels at Bomere-Heath.
