Hopesay, Shropshire

Historical Description

Hopesay, a village, a township, and a parish in Salop. The village stands near the river Clun, 2 miles NW of Broome station on the Central Wales section of the L. & N.W.R., and 7½ SE of Bishops Castle. Post, money order, and telegraph office, Aston-on-Clun (R.S.O.) The parish contains also the townships of Aston-on-Clun, Little Brampton, Carwood, Broome, and part of Eowton. Acreage, 4155; population, 654. The manor belongs to the Earl of Powis. There are vestiges of a Roman camp. The living is a rectory in the diocese of Hereford; gross value, £486 with residence. Patron, the Earl of Powis. The church is ancient, and has a tower. It was restored and enlarged in 1886-88. There are Primitive Methodist and Baptist chapels at Aston-on-Clun.
