Chelmarsh, Shropshire
Historical Description
Chelmarsh, a village and a parish in Salop. The village lies above the river Severn, 1¼ mile W from Eardington station, 2 miles NW of Hampton Loade station on the G.W.R., and 4 S by E of Bridgnorth, under which it has a post office; money order and telegraph office, Bridgnorth. The parish includes the hamlets of Hampton Loade and Sutton., Acreage, 3283; population, 425. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Hereford; value, £210 with residence½ The church, lately restored at a cost of £2000, is of the 14th century, and built on the foundations of a Norman church. The tower, containing six bells, was built in 1710. Chelmarsh and Astbury Halls are in this parish.

Church of England
St. Peter (parish church)
The church of St. Peter is an ancient building of stone, consisting of nave, porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles containing a clock and 6 bells, renovated in 1894: in 1888 the church was restored, the roof repaired, the nave reseated in oak, a new organ erected and the screen restored and replaced in the nave so as to form a chancel, at a cost of £2,300, and in 1891 a new south porch was added: the stained east window was erected in 1892, partly as a memorial to Mrs. T. R. Seddon: new choir stalls, made and carved in the parish, were set up in 1893: the whole interior of the tower was restored in 1894, and in 1899 the top of the tower was reconstructed at a cost of £200: in 1902 the chancel was panelled in oak carved in the village, and in 1905 a new lych gate was presented by A. J. Huston esq. of Astbury Hall: there are sittings for 250 persons.
